Ask Rad Orthodontics: Why are regular dental checkups so important during my treatment?

Are you brushing and flossing daily properly during your orthodontic treatment? If your answer is yes, we think that’s great! But, don’t forget that it’s also important for you to visit your general dentist every 3-to-6 months in addition to brushing your teeth and flossing (and visiting Rad Orthodontics, of course). Regular dental checkups are important for maintaining good oral health, especially during orthodontic treatment with Dr. Rad.

Your general dentist can check for problems that might not be seen or felt, detect cavities and early signs of decay, treat oral health problems early and show you how to properly brush and floss your teeth.

During an oral exam your dentist can check the health of your mouth, teeth, gums, cheeks and tongue. Checkups will also include a thorough teeth cleaning and polishing. If you have not been to the dentist in the last six months, let us know during your next visit and we will provide a few great references in Potomac, College Park or the greater Washington D.C. area!

Ask Dr. Rad: What's the deal with all those Halloween treats?

happy halloween Pictures, Images and Photos

As Halloween nears closer and closer, our staff at Rad Orthodontics know a lot parents here in College Park, Potomac and Washington D.C. are worried about their kids going overboard on candies this weekend.

All those sweet, sour and sticky candies may taste great, but these treats are known to damage teeth, as well as braces! Did you know sour candies can be acidic to your teeth, and actually wear down the enamel that protects them? This can cause tooth decay and cavities! In addition, we also want your child to steer clear of sticky, chewy, gummy and nutty goodies.

Our friends at the American Association of Orthodontists recommend softer treats, such as soft chocolate or peanut butter cups, or melt-in-your-mouth foods. Trick-or-treaters who indulge should make sure they brush and floss between teeth, around brackets and at the gum line. If damage occurs, call Dr. Rad as soon as possible.

We hope everyone has a fun, safe and scary Halloween!

Staying healthy this cold season, from Rad Orthodontics

Here we go again: it's officially cold and flu season, and once again time to remind our patients at Rad Orthodontics to try and steer clear of that cold that's been going around lately.

To promote a healthy and clean environment, we give a great deal of attention to sanitation and sterilization in both our Potomac and College Park offices at all times, as well as following all requirements for sterilizing instruments and work surfaces.

For the protection of other patients, Drs. Rad and our staff, we always ask that patients reschedule their appointments if they have any type of cold or illness that can infect others.

Maintaining and protecting oral hygiene equipment is also important this flu season. To protect your toothbrush from bacteria follow these steps:

• Wash your hands before and after brushing

• Allow the brush to air dry after each use, harmful bacteria dies after being exposed to oxygen

• Store the toothbrush in an upright position to allow water to drain and dry faster

• Replace toothbrush after every cold or flu or every 3-4 months when bristles appear worn

Hope this helps! Stay healthy this fall!

At Rad Orthodontics, October is National Orthodontic Health Month!

October is National Orthodontic Health Month, and our staff at Rad Orthodontics wanted to remind Dr. Rad's patients to be careful when they bite into their treats this month. Remember, caramels, taffy, nuts, bubble gum, popcorn kernels and suckers are some of the foods you should be avoiding this Halloween Season! Indulging in these foods can break your braces and lengthen your treatment time!

Of course, Halloween doesn’t have to be completely treat-less. Our friends at the American Association of Orthodontists have provided a helpful list of tips and braces-friendly recipes for the Halloween Season.

Enjoy and have a wonderful weekend!

Sleep disorders and treatment options in College Park and Potomac

Are you drowsy during the day with no explanation? Do you snore loudly, or wake up breathless in the middle of the night? If so, you may be one of more than 50- to 70 million Americans affected by some form of sleep apnea.

Sleep apnea is considered a serious medical problem that if left untreated can lead to high blood pressure, increasing the risk of heart failure and stroke. It can also take a toll on your overall energy level, as sleep apnea causes an ongoing state of fatigue.

If you suspect that you or someone in your family is suffering from sleep apnea, please give us a call and we can refer you to a sleep apnea specialist here in College Park or Potomac. The specialist may recommend a "sleep study" to diagnose the precise extent of the problem, and can prescribe appropriate treatment. Depending on your situation, treatment may involve an oral device that we can custom-create for you.

September is Childhood Injury Prevention Month! From Rad Orthodontics

With fall sports beginning for a lot of our patients at Rad Orthodontics, we thought we'd remind our young athletes wearing braces to take care of both their mouth and appliances while participating in contact sports (and non-contact sports) this fall.

Dr. Mehdy Rad will tell you that you should ALWAYS wear a mouth guard when playing sports, but especially this month. Why? September is National Childhood Injury Prevention Month.

More than half of the seven million sports and recreation-related injuries that occur each year are sustained by youth between ages 5 and 24. Sixty-seven percent of parents say their child does not wear a mouth guard, yet, 70 percent say their biggest fear when their child plays is that they will get hurt. Despite the risks, many kids are still not wearing mouth guards and facial protection during games and practices.

Our staff strongly encourage you to head over to the American Association of Orthodontists' website for a quick primer on the importance of mouth guards and facial protection.

We hope this helps you remember to always wear a mouth guard and other forms of protective gear when participating in fall sports around College Park or Potomac! We encourage you to give us a call if you have any questions! Have a great weekend!

Talking retainers with Dr. Mehdy Rad

If you recently completed treatment with Dr. Mehdy Rad, we’d like to congratulate you! Again! Now that your braces have been removed, Dr. Rad or Dr. Dave will provide—or have provided you—with retainers. After your braces come off, teeth may shift out of position if they are not stabilized. Retainers, Dr. Rad will tell you, always provide that stabilization. They are designed to hold teeth in their corrected, ideal positions until the bones and gums adapt to the treatment changes. Wearing retainers exactly as instructed by our doctors and staff is the best insurance that the treatment improvements last for a lifetime.

To learn more about the advantages of wearing retainers after your treatment at Rad Orthodontics, please read this helpful article about retainers from KidsHealth. Also, please visit our website for a few retainer tips.

Smile! It's National Smile Week! From Dr. Mehdy Rad

National Smile Week may almost be over, but it's still a great time to remind our patients at Rad Orthodontics to practice good oral hygiene and keep those pearly whites shining during your treatment! That includes brushing and flossing regularly, avoiding foods that can stain your teeth such as tea and coffee (and many others) and visiting your general dentist in College Park or Potomac on a regular basis.

And, of course, we know smiles are contagious, and are always great to both give and receive. In addition, smiling can actually help you live longer, according to a study conducted earlier this year!

We hope you're having a relaxing and wonderful summer!

The Ormco Insignia System at Rad Orthodontics

You're getting braces this summer. And while you’re excited about finally having that great smile, you may be nervous about wearing wires and brackets for two or more years. Well, Dr. Mehdy Rad and our staff want to tell you about a new orthodontic system that makes straightening your teeth with braces a lot faster and easier compared to conventional orthodontic treatment. It’s called Insignia and it’s changing the way people feel about their braces.

While traditional orthodontic treatments take two or more years, it’s not true for Insignia. Through the use of Insignia’s sophisticated 3-D imaging, treatment planning, and customized braces with customized precision archwires, Dr. Rad can reduce treatment time compared to that of conventional braces.

In addition to shortening treatment times, the greater efficiency of the Insignia system at Rad Orthodontics also helps reduce the number of wire changes and adjustments you’ll need, and that means fewer trips to our office. The Insignia system’s 3-D software lets Dr. Rad analyze how to effectively and efficiently align your teeth. Through this software, personalized archwires are designed to move your teeth into proper alignment smoothly and directly, reducing the number of maintenance visits.

Give us a call at (301) 637-6476 and ask us about this revolutionary treatment! Have a great weekend!

Thanks to Invisalign's clear aligners, parents can have a perfect smile, too!

Hey parents! Focusing on your kids' teeth and oral health so much that you're neglecting your own? If you've been thinking about having your own set of perfect teeth, Dr. Mehdy Rad is here to help! We are specially trained to offer an adult-friendly option for straightening teeth called Invisalign. In fact, Dr. Rad is an Elite Premier Provider of Invisalign, meaning that we are one of the most experienced practices in the country with the Invisalign and Invisalign Teen systems.

Invisalign consists of a set of clear aligners that are molded to fit your teeth using a proprietary technology. You wear them all day and night, except for meals, brushing, and flossing – when you can easily slip them out to make eating and cleaning a snap!

Because they're clear, your teeth will be steadily straightening – and no one will know it but you! Please give us a call at (301) 299-3993 to set up a complimentary consultation with Dr. Rad, so we can discuss the specifics of your treatment.

Dr. Mehdy Rad and our staff know that treatment can seem long and arduous to some patients. Or, for most folks, it can be a fun and exciting time to get the perfect smile you've been looking for. This summer, our friends at the American Association of Orthodontists would like to reward you for sharing your story in braces with the world. Dr. Rad wants to know: are you suffering from chronic face or neck pain?

At Rad Orthodontics, we know millions of Americans suffer from chronic facial and neck pain - as well as recurrent headaches. In some cases, this pain is due to Temporomandibular Disorder, or TMD.

Your temporomandibular joints, or jaw joints, connect your lower jawbone to your skull. As you may imagine, these joints get quite a lot of use throughout the day as you speak, chew, swallow, and yawn. Pain in and around these joints can be unpleasant and may even restrict movement.

Symptoms of TMD may include:

* Pain in the jaw area
* Pain, ringing, or stuffiness in the ears
* Frequent headaches or neck aches
* Clicking or popping sound when the jaw moves
* Swelling on the sides of the face
* Muscle spasms in the jaw area
* A change in the alignment of top and bottom teeth
* Locked jaw or limited opening of the mouth

For more on TMJ/TMD, we advise you to check out this helpful guide from our friends at the Mayo Clinic. Should you notice any of these symptoms, let us know! We can help advise you as to whether they indicate the presence of TMD, and what sort of treatment is appropriate for you.

Fun (patriotic) facts with Rad Orthodontics!

On Sunday, Dr. Mehdy Rad and our staff will be busy celebrating America's 234th birthday. And because we know our patients love fun facts, we thought we'd provide you with some fun facts about Independence Day!

- Independence Day was first celebrated in Philadelphia on July 8, 1776.

- An estimated 2.5 million people lived in America in July 1776. Today, an estimated 309 million people reside in the United States.

- The major objection to being ruled by Britain was taxation without representation, which meant that people didn't want to be taxed by a government that did not represent them.

- In 1941, Congress declared 4th of July a federal legal holiday. It is one of the few federal holidays that have not been moved to the nearest Friday or Monday.

- The stars on the original American flag were arranged in a circle to ensure that all colonies were equal.

- America's mascot, the bald eagle, can achieve speeds of up to 200 miles per hour when making a predatory dive. During a normal flight, bald eagles can travel up to 30 miles per hour.

- The American flag patch is backwards on U.S. Army uniforms. The reason? The blue field on the flag (the part with the stars) faces forward to symbolize carrying the American flag into battle.

- Someone who specializes in the history of flags is called a vexillologist.

- The word ‘patriotism’ comes from the Latin patria, which means ‘homeland’ or ‘fatherland.’

- According to the National Hot Dog and Sausage Council, Americans consume over 150 million hot dogs during their Independence Day festivities.

- Speaking of food, there's a 1-in-6 chance the beef on your backyard this Independence Day weekend grill came from Texas. The Lone Star State is America's leader in the production of cattle and calves.

We hope you learned a thing or two! Have a wonderful Fourth of July weekend, and we'll see you next week!!

Dr. Rad wants to know: Do you suffer from sleep disorders?

Are you drowsy during the day with no explanation? Do you snore loudly, or wake up breathless in the middle of the night? If so, you may be one of more than twelve million Americans affected by sleep apnea, which can cause loss of sleep among many other health problems. Snoring is one of the most easily identified symptoms of sleep apnea, and as the condition worsens it can lead to airway blockage, which can severely disrupt your sleep patterns.

The following symptoms can indicate the presence of sleep apnea. If you notice one or more of these, give us a call at our Potomac or College Park locations.

* Insomnia or difficulty sleeping
* Loud snoring at night
* Waking up at night short of breath
* Snorting or choking sounds during the night (indicating a restart of breathing)
* Headaches upon waking in the morning
* Falling asleep unintentionally during the day
* Extreme drowsiness throughout the day

Enjoy the rest of your Father's Day weekend!

Smile! June is National Smile Month!

Now that it's June, Dr. Rad and team thought we’d tell you June is National Smile Month, and a good time to remind all our patients to practice good oral hygiene between your visits to our office.

Below are a few simple steps you can take to improve your oral health so that you may celebrate National Smile Month for many, many years to come:

* Brush at least twice a day with fluoride toothpaste. Here's a helpful video showing you how to brush with your braces on.
* Floss everyday to clean between your teeth.
* Reduce your intake of sugary foods and drinks during your orthodontic treatment with Dr. Rad.
* Visit your dentist regularly (usually every six months apart).

If you have questions about any of these tips, we encourage you to give us a call at either of our two convenient locations. We hope you're enjoying the weekend!

Talkin' fluoride with Rad Orthodontics

Dr. Rad and our team will tell you there are many ways you protect your teeth throughout your orthodontic treatment at Rad Orthodontics: You brush your teeth twice a day, floss regularly and protect your appliances from being damaged. But did you know there's another way to keep your teeth sparkling and healthy during your treatment?

Fluoride, which can help with cavity prevention and tooth decay, can also help keep your teeth strong! Fluoride comes in two varieties: topical and systemic. Topical fluoride is applied directly to the tooth and is found in toothpastes and mouth rinses. Systemic fluorides, however, are swallowed in the form of a dietary supplement. Orthodontists like Dr. Rad use in-office fluoride treatments to help protect the oral health of adults and children undergoing orthodontic procedures.

Fluoride used at Rad Orthodontics is often a stronger concentration than in toothpaste or mouthwash, but is available at some drug stores or a pharmacy (ask Dr. Rad how to purchase professional strength fluoride). A fluoride treatment typically takes just a few minutes. After the treatment patients may be asked not to rinse, eat or drink for at least 30 minutes in order to allow the teeth to absorb the fluoride. Depending on your oral health or doctor’s recommendation, you may be required to have a fluoride treatment every three, six or 12 months. Dr. Rad may also prescribe a fluoride product such as mouthwashes, gels or antibacterial rinses for in-home treatment.

When choosing your own fluoride product, be sure to check for the American Dental Association’s seal of approval. Take care of your teeth, and smile bright!

We hope you're having a fantastic Memorial Day weekend!

Dr. Mehdy Rad, bridging the gap between the myths and facts of braces

Trust us, Dr. Mehdy Rad and team know there are many, many myths about orthodontics flying around these days. You've probably heard about a few of them, but before you buy into those myths, we think think you should get the facts! We came across a great site that helps set the record straight (no pun intended). If you have any questions about orthodontics or your treatment here at Rad Orthodontics, feel free to give us a call at (301) 299-3993!

Rad Orthodontics at the 110th AAO Annual Session!

To better serve Potomac, College Park and surrounding communities with the highest quality orthodontic care available, Dr. Mehdy Rad and team are committed to continuing education - and acquisition of the latest orthodontic technology. One of the ways Dr. Rad and our team improve our service is by attending conferences, meetings and seminars, and this past weekend, we were in Washington D.C. attending the AAO Annual Session, an educational event that happens to be one of the largest orthodontic conventions in the world - and one that allows us to consult with orthodontists from around the country and stay up-to-date on all the latest technologies and orthodontic treatment options available. This, in turn, allows Rad Orthodontics to give you, our wonderful patients, the best treatment experience possible.

Dr. Rad is a board certified orthodontist and an active member of the American Dental Association, American Association of Orthodontists, American Board of Orthodontics and the Greater Washington Orthodontic Society. He is also the President of the Bi-County Dental Study Club and the Potomac Dental Study Club. Dr. Rad is involved in the dental community as an associate clinical professor in the department of orthodontics at the University of Maryland Dental School in Baltimore. In addition, he also lectures locally and nationally on a broad range of topics related to orthodontics.

If you've got an appointment scheduled with Dr. Rad in the coming weeks, we invite you to ask him about the AAO Annual Session, including what he learned and how continuing education and acquisition of new technology helps us treat you more effectively.

"Hey, Dr. Rad! Am I too old for orthodontic treatment?"

Absolutely not. At Rad Orthodontics, no one is ever too old for braces. In fact, our staff recently read an interesting statistic: the number of adults getting braces has actually climbed 24 percent from just 14 years ago! Yes, braces help make your pearly whites strong, healthy and perfectly-aligned, but perhaps another reason for the spike in adult braces is this: people want to look and feel great. In an age—and society—where looks matter as much as anything, and at a time when evenly-aligned teeth might be the difference between getting a job or a promotion, adults are choosing—wisely, we might add—to invest in orthodontics. Orthodontic treatment with Dr. Mehdy Rad can be successful at any age, and adults especially appreciate the benefits of a beautiful smile.

If you’ve been thinking about getting that perfect smile, Dr. Rad would love to have you visit for a consultation. Please give us a call at 301-345-7710 to set one up!

This Earth Day, are you making a difference? from Rad Orthodontics

At Rad Orthodontics, we support Earth Day, which marks its 40th anniversary today and is designed to inspire awareness and appreciation for our environment and ecosystem.

Invisalign: Is it for everyone? Dr. Rad explains

Part of what makes Invisalign
work, is that the treatment is customizable for so many different types of mouths. To find out if you are the right candidate for Invisalign treatment at Rad Orthodontics, the first thing Dr. Mehdy Rad does, is take an impression of your teeth as they are now and digitize it. Using special software, Dr. Rad looks at the current positioning of your teeth and compare it to the way your teeth should look.

Next, Dr. Rad and team use special software to map out the exact path your teeth will take from the beginning of your treatment to the end. Based on the results, a set of custom aligners are created just for your teeth. Throughout the course of treatment, you will be required to wear these clear, removable aligners one at a time; each one moving your teeth closer and closer to their final, perfectly aligned position. The best thing about it all? Nobody around you will even know you are wearing braces!

Dr. Rad is a Premier Invisalign Provider in Potomac and College Park. As a Premier Invisalign Provider, Dr. Rad is in the top 5% of Invisalign Practitioners in North America. If you have questions about Invisalign, or would like to find out if you are a candidate for Invisalign treatment, please give us a call.

Ask Dr. Rad: Why are straight teeth so important?

Some people wonder why Dr. Mehdy Rad and our team work tirelessly to give our patients straight teeth. It’s nice to have a smile full of evenly aligned teeth, but did you know that straightening your teeth at Rad Orthodontics can keep them healthier? Straight teeth lead to better oral hygiene, increasing your chances of keeping your own natural teeth for a lifetime!

Straight teeth are less prone to decay, because they collect less plaque—the sticky colorless substance that forms on our teeth and leads to tooth decay; and they are easier to keep clean! At Rad Orthodontics, our team wants to give you and your family the best orthodontic care for the best smiles. It is our goal at Rad Orthodontics to provide patients with a positive orthodontic experience that is comfortable, effective, and most of all, fun!

If you’re wondering whether your teeth might cause problems because they are out of alignment, please give us a call to set up a consultation. Dr. Rad can help you decide whether or not you will benefit from orthodontic treatment.

This April, play it safe! From Rad Orthodontics

April is almost upon us, and our staff at Rad Orthodontics wants you, our valued young patients, to stay safe on the field this month - after all, April is National Facial Protection Month.

Our friends at the American Association of Orthodontists, or AAO, say children up to 14 years old account for 80 percent of all sports-related emergency room visits. Here are five tips to save face while having fun this spring.

1. Wear mouth guards for contact sports such as baseball, softball, soccer and lacrosse.
2. Wear a helmet
3. Wear protective eyewear
4. Wear a face shield to avoid scratched or bruised skin
5. Be alert, even as a spectator

We hope that helps. Protective gear is vital for anyone engaging in tooth or mouth-threatening activities, says Dr. Rad. If you have any further questions about any of these tips, please contact our team at Rad Orthodontics. Stay safe!
